No Hibernating Here
When we decided to close the shop in March, we took some major risks. March can be one of our best months and it can also be a big flop. Owning a seasonal business and closing for a weekend (potentially) during the season was a risk we were willing to take. Yes, people came to the shop only to look at the sign on the door and may have been disappointed if not angry. We apologize for the inconvenience to anyone that came to the shop.
When we took over the shop on March 1st, 2014, we wanted to make a better bike shop, grow the cycling community, and grow the stoke for the sport that we love. As it turns out, we stopped riding together because someone has to be in the shop to run it. This year, we drew the line. Not only did we need a break, we needed one together. So we packed up our gear and headed to Winterbike 2018 in East Burke, Vermont. With very little snowfall and high temps in Vermont, it was looking like a big mistake but we were past the point of no return. The house was rented and the email to our customers and social media was sent out.
The moment the first group ride started, it was all worthwhile. Yes, it was raining and the trail went from icy to slushy to crunchy in the first 100 yards but we were in the woods together. Better yet, we were with some new friends and one that even flew from Sweden to join us. The furthest thing from our mind on that first ride was bike sales and service. We were more focused on not eating shit and getting back to the rental house in one piece to enjoy the plethora of beers that awaited us. The conditions were so crappy the first day, we weren't sure if it was worth riding the next day but again, we didn't care. We were on bikes, in nature, and together as friends should be.
We realize this may sound like no big deal to those who frequently take vacations or trips with their buds but when your closest friends are the ones you work with at a small business, this is a challenge. For us, Winterbike turned from trip of a lifetime to an annual trip and shop closing the moment we were all loaded up and heading home. Until next year, we can't wait!
